Decarbonizing supply chains will be critical in order for governments to meet their commitments to create net-zero emission economies by 2050.
Governments face an immense challenge if they are to decarbonize the supply chain industry by 2050; a sector still almost entirely dependent on fossil fuels. Goals will only be met by a combination of strategies which reduce the carbon intensity of the transport industry through the use of alternative fuels; switch freight to lower carbon transport modes; improve energy efficiency of freight movements and increase the utilization of capacity. New technologies will play an important role in these efforts, but realistically there will also have to be a reduction in the amount of freight moved through supply chains. Is this feasible or even desirable, given the potential economic consequences? To what extent can the industry – and governments – rely on technological developments to help them meet their targets?
